The Itto-ryu Bokuto is designed with less curvature (sori) than standard bokuto or Yagyu Shinkage-ryu models, and features a thicker blade and handle. This construction provides excellent stability and impact resistance, making it especially well-suited for suburi practice and paired kenjutsu kata involving contact.

We offer both daito (long) and shoto (short) versions in Japanese white oak with a urethane finish. Additional wood types and custom finishes are also available upon request.

What is Itto-ryu?

Itto-ryu is one of the most influential schools of kenjutsu and played a key role in shaping modern kendo. It is known for its direct, efficient techniques, including the signature kiriotoshi, where an opponent’s strike is deflected and immediately countered.

The style often utilizes a specialized, thick forearm protector called onigote, allowing for safe contact practice with bokuto.

Founded by the legendary Ito Ittosai and later developed by Ono Jiro Uemon Tadaaki, Itto-ryu became one of the official martial traditions of the Tokugawa shogunate. Today, under the leadership of its 17th headmaster Takemi Sasamori, its influence continues to extend into other martial arts such as Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu and Aikido.
