About Katori Shinto Ryu

Katori Shinto Ryu is one of Japan’s oldest and most renowned martial arts, introduced to the West by Don Draeger. With a history spanning over 650 years, it was founded by Iizasa Choisai Ienao following 1,000 days of intense training.

This classical martial art emphasizes paired kata, where partners practice a wide array of techniques together. Originating from battlefield combat, Katori Shinto Ryu includes methods using swords, staffs, and spears—training practitioners to respond effectively to various scenarios, including armored opponents. Its techniques have been carefully preserved through generations and are practiced today both in Japan and worldwide.
